Washington D.C., March 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In response to Congress failing to pass a legislative fix for DACA before President Trump’s March 5th deadline, United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Interim President and CEO Fernand Fernandez issued the following statement:
“DREAMers were promised a legislative solution by March 5th, but that deadline has now passed. Once again, despite bipartisan support for DACA recipients, our leaders in Congress have failed to pass legislation that would provide security for the 1.8 million DREAMers—the individuals that qualify for or are currently registered for the DACA program. DREAMers contribute $40 billion to our nation’s GDP each year. They pay $2 billion in state and local taxes. Ninety-seven percent of DACA recipients are employed, in school, or in the United States military.
America needs DREAMers. While the courts have staved off the program’s end for now, the USHCC remains committed to a legislative solution that will safeguard an American future for these individuals. The time to act is now. We ask that Speaker Ryan and Leader McConnell work for America’s best interests and pass legislation that permanently solves this issue, ending the pattern of instability.”
