Canada Launches Safety Week in Victoria

Hundreds of safety-focused events occurring coast-to-coast

VICTORIA, British Columbia, May 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This morning Canada launched its national week of safety awareness on the lawn of the BC Legislature in Victoria, BC. The ceremony for North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week included awards, an Honour Guard Parade, and a Search and Rescue demonstration in Victoria Harbour.

“Workplace safety is not simple,” stated Dr. Robert Long, a world leader in workplace safety psychology, in his address at the NAOSH Week launch. “Choosing to be safe is the first step. However, humans are social and our behavior is influenced by many factors. Workers, policy makers and businesses must work together to make workplaces safe. Safety is a social activity.” Dr. Long, based in Australia, is in western Canada this week to share his research through seminars for safety professionals.

“Each of us go to work expecting to come home safe,” stated the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering president Kathy Tull, CHSC, CRSP. “Every day I am inspired by the efforts of workers, government, business leaders, labour organizations and safety professionals to reduce risk and improve the environment in which we work.”

The Honourable Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, presented the Safety Champion Awards. The newly expanded awards recognize innovative programs and British Columbians that are passionate about safety. The winners are:

  • Peter Sage, Traffic Control Person – SPR Traffic Services LP
  • Ed Miska, Executive Director, Engineering – Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure
  • Mainroad Group’s South Island Safety Committee
