Association Announces Name Change

Fairfax, Virginia, Sept. 21, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- To accurately reflect its expanding mission of serving the global security community, AFCEA International is now the official name of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.

The association was established in 1946 by several military and industry leaders who recognized that cooperation between the services and commercial sector needed to continue after World War II to ensure peace. The founding members created an ethical forum, free of political rhetoric and grandstanding, so professional relationships could be maintained for the benefit of all. The initial Army Signal Association enabled government agencies to keep abreast of the latest communications technologies and industries to respond to immediate needs.

During the subsequent decades, both security requirements and technology have changed immensely. AFCEA International has matched this change by establishing relationships with the multitude of organizations now responsible for securing global peace, including homeland security, intelligence and cybersecurity.

“We look forward to continuing our mission to bring government and industry together to advance the government's technology strategy and address issues facing the global security community," states DeEtte Gray, chairwoman of the board, AFCEA International.

Lt. Gen. Robert M. Shea, USMC (Ret.), president and CEO, AFCEA International, concurs. “The change from Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association to the acronym AFCEA reflects the expansion in our mission, the rapid evolution of technology and the extended interests of our membership base over the years. It reflects that we are not only a communications and electronics association but an association with broad and deep interests in all aspects of C5ISR, related technologies and their collective impact on international security,” Gen. Shea states.

AFCEA International, established in 1946, is a non-profit membership association serving the military, government, industry and academia. Join online.
