Oregon Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to be Integrated Into Electronic Health Record and Pharmacy Management Systems Statewide with Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway Solution

PMP Gateway Enables Instant Access to PDMP Information Directly in Clinical Workflow for All Prescribers and Pharmacists in Oregon

Louisville, KY, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Appriss Health, provider of the most comprehensive platform for substance use disorder in the U.S., today announced that it has partnered with HIT Commons, a shared public/private governance model between the Oregon Health Leadership Council and the Oregon Health Authority, to oversee the initiative to integrate PDMP information into the electronic health Record (EHR) and pharmacy management systems of all prescribers and pharmacists in Oregon with Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway solution. The Oregon PDMP Integration Steering Council is responsible for guiding a successful implementation and adoption of this initiative. This initiative aligns with broader state and federal efforts to increase the use of PDMPs to reduce inappropriate prescriptions, improve patient outcomes, and promote more informed prescribing practices.

“For providers, PDMP information is best leveraged by integrating it into the existing electronic health record,” said Lee David Milligan, M.D., Vice-President/Chief Medical Information Officer, Asante, and Member, OHA’s Oregon Opioid Prescribing Guidelines Task Force. “Logging into one system allows for seamless access to the right information at the right time—thus ensuring appropriate opioid prescriptions make it into circulation and greater coordination among healthcare providers. If necessary, this single system will also help providers treat potential opioid addiction with more effective solutions.”

The statewide integration of the Oregon PDMP platform into EHRs and pharmacy management systems at the point-of-care increases the ease of access and use of PDMP information for making critical clinical decisions, including the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances, as well as patient care and safety. Prior to this integration initiative, prescribers and pharmacists had to log in to separate systems to query patient information which took important time away from patient care. Integrations simplify the patient query process by making the PDMP platform directly available to prescribers and pharmacists in their daily workflow.

“In a complex information system where providers are seemingly endless clicks away from critical information, integration of the PDMP information not only improves patient care, but also helps tackle provider ‘click fatigue,’” said Saleen Manternach, M.D., FACEP, Emergency Medicine, Oregon Health & Science University. “When the relevant information you need is all in one place and easily accessible, it translates into improved and efficient care. The goal is to streamline the process, so everyone benefits.”

This integration initiative also further enables PDMP information and more to be delivered through Collective Medical. The Collective network enables care teams to identify complex and vulnerable patients and collaborate on their care. Along with PDMP information, insights including patient utilization activity and collaborative care plans are delivered to care teams through the Collective network via real-time, risk-adjusted event notifications.

Recently, CDC estimated that more than 71,000 people in the U.S. died from drug overdose death in the 12-month period ending in January 2018.

From April to June of 2018, nearly 380,000 queries were made to the Oregon PDMP from more than 23,000 registered users.

Since their inception, PDMPs have proven to be effective in combating prescription drug misuse, abuse, overdose and death nationwide. However, integrating PDMP information, analytics, insights, and resources into EHRs and pharmacy management system workflow is a critical step in the progression of optimizing the use of PDMPs.

Oregon, along with Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia have all aligned with Appriss Health to sponsor state-wide adoption of PDMP integrations for all prescribers and pharmacists. State-wide sponsorship is by far the most cost effective, efficient and secure method of enabling PDMP integrations in clinical workflow available today.

Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway solution is now live in 36 states and processes more than 21 million transactions per month in partnership with our 100-plus EHR and pharmacy management systems vendors. PMP Gateway is the industry standard and most widely-deployed solution for integrating PDMP information and much more into clinical workflow to provide clinical decision support, patient support, patient engagement, and care team coordination efficiently to providers all across the nation.

“Integration of PDMP information and more into provider workflow is a critical component to expanding the usage and usefulness of the PDMP and it will make an impact on the health and well-being of millions of patients and their families across Oregon going forward,” said Rob Cohen, president of Appriss Health. “We sincerely hope that every prescriber and pharmacist in Oregon will participate in, and benefit from, this integration initiative. We are very proud to partner with Oregon as they enable this ‘technology for good’ today to solve real-world problems in the fight against the opioid epidemic.”

About the Oregon PDMP
Oregon has consistently supported electronic access to PDMP data including sharing data with other state PDMPs. All prescribers in Oregon are mandated to enroll in the PDMP and become authorized users. OHA’s Public Health PDMP staff authorize users, manage the PDMP registry, and work to connect to other states’ PDMPs. To date, Oregon’s PDMP team has connected to five other state PDMPs, with three more in process. For more information, visit www.orpdmp.com.
