Parcel lockers reduced failed deliveries to zero and delivery truck parking time by 78 percent according to study from The University of Washington’s Urban Freight Lab at the Supply Chain Transportation and Logistics Center
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Parcel Pending, the nation's leading provider of innovative package management solutions, is proud to announce results of The University of Washington’s Urban Freight Lab at the Supply Chain Transportation and Logistics Center (SCTL) study, “The Final 50 Feet Urban Goods Delivery System: Common Carrier Locker Pilot Test at the Seattle Municipal Tower,” which examined the effectiveness of parcel lockers in alleviating major traffic congestions in Seattle. According to the study, parcel lockers both reduced failed deliveries to zero and reduced delivery truck parking time by 78 percent when compared to traditional floor-to-floor, door-to-door delivery in Seattle.
“This study proves what we already knew - parcel lockers really are a game-changer when it comes to weathering the daily overload of packages and deliveries in congested major U.S. cities,” stated Lori A. Online shopping is booming and according to SCTL there may be twice as many trucks delivering packages in Seattle within five years if online shopping continues to grow at its current rate. This would double the number of trucks looking for a parking space in Seattle and negatively impact traffic and the environment in the city.
For these reasons, SCTL decided to test parcel lockers from Parcel Pending to see if they would help reduce the amount of time delivery trucks spent parked in a loading space, as well as the time drivers spent running around, up-and-down elevators and in-and-out of buildings trying to deliver packages. They also wanted to determine if parcel lockers could reduce the rate of failed first deliveries, which occur up to 15 percent of the time.
“Reducing the number of failed delivery attempts, as well as the amount of time a delivery truck is parked in a loading space could offer significant public and private benefits,” stated Barbara Ivanov, director of the UW’s Urban Freight Lab. “These two actions alone could reduce congestion and free up curb space for cars, buses, bicycles and other people who need to use that shared public space.”
