New Haven, CT, Nov. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On Thursday, Nov. 15th, at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the construction of Phase I – a 770-kW carport photovoltaic solar power system located on parking lots throughout the campus. The solar power system is expected to offset approximately 30 percent of Albertus Magnus’ annual electricity consumption. Joining Albertus for the ceremony were project partners Green Street Power Partners, LLC (GSPP), Shawmut, Swinerton Renewable Energy (SRE), and The United Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR).
“I am very excited to include solar power production as part of our campus energy and sustainability programs,” said Bill Hawkins, Albertus Magnus College VP for finance, administration and treasurer. “The solar carports are a great way for us to turn otherwise unproductive parking areas into environmentally friendly energy-producing sites. We will save on utility costs and help the environment. As a bonus, we think students will also appreciate parking under the canopies which may provide some protection from the elements.”
“This solar power sustainability initiative aligns with our mission centric values and also enables us to offset a significant portion of our annual electrical consumption,” added Dr. Marc M. Camille, president, Albertus Magnus College.
The 770-kilowatt solar system is projected to produce ~923,940 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This is equivalent to removing the greenhouse gases produced by ~147 vehicles each year or preserving ~140 acres of forest over the lifetime of the system.
“It’s evident that Albertus Magnus College has a forward-thinking mindset to create a sustainable future for their campus,” said Scott Kerner, chief executive officer, Green Street Power Partners, LLC. “We are proud to be Albertus Magnus’ chosen solar partner as they bring renewable energy to their school.”
The college will purchase the electricity at a competitive, fixed rate under a 25-year power purchase agreement. In addition to solar carports, Albertus Magnus anticipates it may add a ~228-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic array on the campus athletic center, offsetting an additional 10 percent of Albertus Magnus’ electricity, bringing the collective impact to 40 percent. Construction on the rooftop solar array is currently in its planning stages.
