MONTREAL, Nov. 28, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Foundation for Legal Research is delighted to announce Professor Yaëll Emerich as this year’s winner of the Walter Owen Book Prize. Professor Emerich will be recognized at this evening’s annual holiday gathering of the Canadian Bar Association Quebec Branch in Montreal.
This prestigious award was created in honour of its namesake, who was the first President of the Foundation. The prize rewards excellent legal writing and outstanding new contributions to Canadian legal doctrine.
Professor Emerich is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University, where she teaches Property Law and Secured Transactions. Her book, Droit commun des biens : perspective transsystémique (Property law: a transsystemic perspective), was chosen out of 19 entries for the $10,000 cash prize.
Published in 2017 by Éditions Yvon Blais, the book compares personal property law in western and Indigenous traditions, exploring their unity, diversity and philosophical foundations.
“At a time of globalization of law and interaction between civil law traditions, common law and Indigenous principles, this comparative work… will undoubtedly become an essential reference,” says Me Martine Valois, Associate Professor at l’Université de Montréal and Chair of the Walter Owen Book Prize Jury.
The Foundation also recognizes the following finalists: Florian Martin-Bariteau for Le droit de marque : une approche fonctionnelle dans l'économie globale et numérique (Trademark Law: A Functional Approach in the Global Digital Economy), and authors Ivan Tchotourian and Naomi Koffi for Gouvernance d'entreprise et fonds d'investissement (hedge funds) : réflexions juridiques sur un activisme d'un nouveau genre (Corporate Governance and Investment Funds (Hedge Funds): Reflections on a new kind of activism).
“Our winner and finalists have produced important, valuable work that will enhance legal practice in Canada. I’d like to extend my congratulations and wholehearted thanks for each of their contributions,” says Michelle Awad, Chair of The Canadian Foundation for Legal Research.
