Rick Hansen Foundation Secondary School Receives Top Certification for Accessibility

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia, March 06, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Rick Hansen Secondary School (RHSS) in Abbotsford, BC, received the ‘Accessibility Certified Gold’ rating under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program. Rick Hansen Secondary is the first school to receive the rating in Canada.

The RHFAC is the first program to measure the level of meaningful access beyond building code, and is based upon the holistic user experience of people with varying disabilities affecting their mobility, vision and hearing. To date, over 1,100 buildings across BC are registered to be rated with 700 having already received their scorecard.

In achieving this certification, Rick Hansen Secondary has removed barriers and improved accessibility for 650 students and employees —achieving a high score of 85 out of 100 points. The school has a broad range of accessibility features that led to this score including:

• Elevators: Three elevators, one of which is an oversized elevator to accommodate extra-large wheel chairs that recline
• Wayfinding: built into the tile as well as interior signage with raised lettering and braille
• Accessible cafeteria: tables accommodate wheelchairs
• Visual Alarms: in hallways and washrooms indicating an emergency to warn hearing impaired individuals
• Cane detectable trophy cases and water bottle fill stations: to assist with navigation for visually impaired individuals
• Accessible washrooms: on each floor including one with a lift
• Automated double door entries: in the main west and east lobby
• Guardrails: for safety around the exterior areas of the building that lead onto steep slopes
• Large accessible parking spaces: to accommodate vans with side ramps
• Nosing on exterior stairs: to delineate end of steps as well as tactile areas at the top of stairs, ramps and landing areas
• Ramps: to upper parking lot and stadium seating
