New study shows high-fat diet may be key to reversing diabetes

Canadian researcher finds reversal of type 2 diabetes with ketogenic diet

BARRIE, Ontario, March 07, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a research article published in the medical journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targets and Therapy, researcher Dr. Steve Rallis has found that patients following a high-fat, low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet are able to dramatically improve their blood sugar regulation while reducing diabetic medication. In one case, the patient demonstrated a complete reversal in his diabetic condition.

“There is a growing body of evidence that suggests a ketogenic diet may be the most effective diet for patients with diabetes,” according to Dr. Rallis, a Canadian-based chiropractor and naturopathic doctor. “Diabetes is a disease that revolves around impairment to blood sugar regulation. Established guidelines continue to promote carbohydrate-dominant meals which generally lead to a further deterioration in the patient’s condition and the need for increased medication. Implementing a non-sugar requiring fuel system such as a ketogenic diet may offer a compelling alternative in the treatment of this disease”

Two diabetic patients, a 65-year-old female, and a 52-year-old male were placed on high-fat, low carbohydrate ketogenic diets and monitored for 12 weeks. The 65-year-old female achieved normal blood sugar levels while reducing diabetic medication by 75%. The 52-year-old male demonstrated a complete reversal of his condition while eliminating all diabetic medications. Approximately 450 million people are living with diabetes globally making it a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In Canada alone, it has been estimated that a staggering 22.1% of the population have prediabetes.
