CALGARY, Alberta, May 02, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The more books a child has at home, the better chance they will grow up to be a confident and enthusiastic reader. Yet research in 2017 found more than 50% of Canadian households don’t spend any money on books and 25% of Canadian households contain no books at all. As a result, it’s estimated that the low literacy rate in Alberta is 45%.
The annual Book Sale in support of Calgary Reads will help put more books into the hands and homes of struggling young readers and improve their literacy. Calgary Reads uses all the proceeds from the sale to increase book access and support the many early literacy programs.
“Often, we take our ability to read for granted but it is a talent that we possess, and it’s not something that we learned in isolation”, says Steacy Collyer, the Founder and CEO of Calgary Reads. “We all had someone, or some group of people, who helped us to read and the development of literacy skills from an early age is critical to future success in school and in life.”
The Calgary Reads Book Bank distributes books to clients of the Calgary Food Bank, to children through schools and to babies and parents through public health nurses. Schools, Little Free Library stewards and community agencies are invited to pick up the unsold books from our Big Book Sale and distribute them.
Calgary Reads is making a difference one book at time and helping shift the book imbalance in Calgary.
The 2019 CBC Calgary Reads Big Book Sale will be held May 10, 11, 12 at the Calgary Curling Club. We accept Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children’s books.
