STEAM Week, hosted by STEAM Universe, a Division of 1105 Media Inc., Returns with Second Free Learning Series on STEM and STEAM Education

Virtual event includes $1,000 grant opportunity for attendees.


Irvine, CA, Oct. 22, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- STEAM Universe, in partnership with THE Journal and Campus Technology, is pleased to announce the return of STEAM Week 2019, a multi-day virtual event focused exclusively on STEM and STEAM in both K-12 and postsecondary education. Following the successful launch of the first STEAM Week event last June, this free professional learning series for educators will take place November 12 & 14, 2019 with all-new sessions. Day 1: Your Esports Playbook

Integrating Esports into STEAM

Chris Aviles, middle school teacher and author of the Guide to Esports in Education, takes a deep dive into esports in the context of STEAM education.

Behind the Scenes of Collegiate Esports

Stephane Muller, director of business & technology programs at the University of California, Irvine and the instructor for a four-course esports specialization on Coursera, will explain the ins and outs of esports in higher education, from games, players and professional organizations, to scholarships, career planning and more.

Esports Leagues: From Curriculum to Competitions

Esports leagues can extend the benefits of esports by providing a framework for a successful organization that blends education, scholarships, support and access to opportunities beyond high school.

Day 2: From Coding to Career

The Why and How of Running University Hackathons

Hackathons can inspire innovation, create a sense of community and teach computer science skills, helping build up the next generation of technology leaders and entrepreneurs. Jon Gottfried, co-founder of Major League Hacking, will discuss the ins and outs of running hackathons in higher ed. Major League Hacking is a global student hacker community and has supported thousands of hackathons, technical workshops and recruiting events for hundreds of thousands of students around the world. This session will share everything from logistical considerations and student engagement to pedagogical concerns and long-term strategy.

Inspiring Digital Learners and Leaders

Georgia State University’s Digital Learners to Leaders initiative is an experiential learning program working to develop the next generation of diverse digital problem solvers. Learn how students from all backgrounds are honing in-demand digital skills through industry partnerships, hackathons, exposure to the Internet of Things and more, both at the college level and at summer camps for local middle and high school communities.

Each session will be followed by a Twitter chat using the hashtag #STEAMweek2019, for attendees to continue the conversation, share experiences and brainstorm. Attendees who register for STEAM Week, attend at least one session and participate in the Twitter chat during the event dates will be eligible to win one of two $1,000 grants (winners will be chosen at random).
