There are two disciplines of speed skating: long track and short track. Long track is done on a 400m ice oval typically in a time-trial format where two skaters go head-to-head. The long Track also hosts the Team Pursuit that involves two teams of three skaters chasing each other down from opposite sides of the track and the Mass Start where more than 15 skaters race head to head. In the U.S. there are only seven long track ovals in Anchorage, Salt Lake City, Butte Montana, Roseville Minnesota, Milwaukee, and Lake Placid. Short track speed skating is raced on a 111m track on a standard ice rink. In the U.S., there are 37 states with ice rinks hosting short track clubs.
