Nokia / Internet Security Systems partnership delivers intrusion detection breakthrough

Enterprise customers and managed service providers benefit from simplicity, reliability, and performance when deploying intrusion detection appliance

Nokia (NYSE:NOK), and Internet Security Systems (ISS), a leading provider of security management solutions for the Internet, announced today, RealSecure™ for Nokia, resulting in the first enterprise-class intrusion detection appliance. Through their ongoing joint engineering efforts, the two companies are delivering the market’s premier intrusion detection solution -- ISS RealSecure™, on the world’s most popular security appliance platforms -- the Nokia IP650, IP440, and IP330.

Intrusion detection has become critical in enterprise networks, especially as more business is done electronically between business partners, customers and suppliers. Threats to e-commerce networks must be continuously and vigilantly identified and thwarted. Intrusion detection is crucial to reliably examining destructive behavior on the network. Managed Service Providers who offer security services are also responsible for actively monitoring and protecting their networks, ensuring that their customers’ data and reputations are preserved.

The Nokia/ISS relationship has delivered a purpose-built, plug and play, enterprise-class intrusion detection appliance, offering significant benefits over traditional intrusion detection deployment options. With RealSecure for Nokia software pre-loaded on the Nokia platform, and pre-configured for the customer's network, commissioning the device is as simple as turning it on. This appliance-based solution for intrusion detection significantly reduces the time and cost of deployment for this critical security technology. Additionally, this system is configured for simple remote monitoring and management with fewer points of failure on the network. Enterprises, VARs, and service providers will all benefit from this breakthrough level of simplicity.

“Nokia and ISS recognized the customer demand for a more rapidly deployable intrusion detection solution,” said John Carosella, Vice President, Marketing & Business Development, Nokia Internet Communications. “Our partnership with ISS has delivered a market-expanding solution that is enterprise, service-provider, and channel friendly.”

According to Forrester Research, security appliances enjoy the lowest overall cost of ownership due to the availability of standard configurations and easy installation. They also address the security needs of a broad market, including small businesses and remote offices where little technical aptitude and much less security expertise is available. Security appliances are also attractive to high-end users who are serious about security and willing to purchase specialized devices to support that need.

“Intrusion detection is a fundamental information security technology necessary in securing today’s ever changing e-business environments,” added Steve Russ, Vice President of Market Strategy and Corporate Development for Internet Security Systems. “Our relationship with Nokia, and the resulting appliance solution, is a clear indication of our commitment to bring the benefits of intrusion detection- automatic attack recognition and response and overall enterprise threat management and protection- to an increasingly broad and demanding market.”

The first combined ISS – Nokia product will be available through authorized Nokia resellers and ISS direct sales starting May 30, 2000.

RealSecure™ Intrusion Detection
RealSecure, a critical component of ISS’ SAFEsuite security management solutions, is the industry’s first integrated network and host-based intrusion detection and response system providing comprehensive enterprise information protection. RealSecure Sensors watch packets of traffic traveling over a network segment or on a specific machine for evidence that an attempted intrusion is taking place. If an intrusion is detected, alerts are automatically generated and sent to a centralized security management console for follow up and review. Moreover, RealSecure can automatically block the intrusion by terminating the connection, recording the session, sending email, phone or pager alerts, reconfiguring firewalls and any other actions specified by the user.
