Logicon, U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Complete Upgrade of Cray Supercomputer

HERNDON, Va., June 20, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Logicon Inc., a Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) company, and the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) at Stennis Space Center, Miss., have completed a major upgrade of a Cray T3E supercomputing system, making it among the most powerful supercomputers in existence.

This upgrade increases the system's capacity to 1088 processors and 404 gigabytes of memory, providing an aggregate peak performance of 980 Gigaflops. Based on the June 2000 listing of the world's Top 500 Supercomputer Sites, this computational power makes the NAVOCEANO T3E the 13th fastest supercomputer in the world and the 10th fastest in the United States. The list is updated and published twice a year by supercomputing experts Jack Dongarra from the University of Tennessee and Erich Strohmaier and Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim (Germany).

"We're very pleased with the formidable computing capability the upgraded T3E will offer to our nationwide Department of Defense (DoD) user community," said Steve Adamec, director, Major Shared Resource Center (MSRC), NAVOCEANO. "The system will play a key role in providing the computational capability needed by DoD scientists and engineers to address rapidly escalating research and development and operational needs for high-performance computing."

NAVOCEANO manages and operates one of four defense department MSRC's under the auspices of the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization program. Each MSRC provides leading-edge computational, storage, networking and data visualization capabilities in support of military research and development.

The NAVO MSRC systems also provide accurate, high-resolution oceanic and atmospheric forecast models to support DoD missions, and furnish civilian researchers with weather forecasting and global change testing capabilities. MSRC users include researchers from the U.S Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and other DoD agencies and contractors from both industry and academia.

As the prime information technology contractor on site, Logicon provides a combination of large-scale systems integration and high-performance computing expertise with full-service maintenance, support and upgrade capabilities.

"The T3E system supports NAVOCEANO's strategic direction of providing capability solutions to satisfy some of the DoD's most challenging research needs," said Richard Imgram, director-High Performance Systems, Logicon.

Recent work done by the Ocean Modeling group at the Naval Research Lab at Stennis, running on NAVOCEANO's recently upgraded Cray T3E supercomputer, was recognized by Computerworld Smithsonian Awards (CWSA) as one of five finalists in the Science category. CWSA honors corporations, organizations and individuals who are creating positive change in society through applications of technology. Each finalist's work becomes part of the Smithsonian Institution's permanent research collection.
