Nokia and Tele Danmark Sign Agreement for Nokia GPRS Network Paving the Way to 3G


FINLAND, July 05, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Nokia and leading Danish telecommunications operator, Tele Danmark, have signed an agreement for the delivery of the Nokia GPRS Core network solution.

The Nokia GPRS Core network solution will allow Tele Danmark to provide true Mobile Internet access to its subscribers offering packet switched data via the operator's GSM network. The GPRS network will be ready for commercial use by early next year.

For mobile subscribers GPRS offers the advantage of enjoying the possibility of continuous connectivity to the Internet, the corporate Intranet or a WAP portal, for fast access to new content-rich services and paves the way to advanced 3G services.

Nokia is at the forefront of development and implementation of GPRS infrastructure for mobile operators, as existing second Generation networks evolve to 3G. Since August 1999, Nokia has delivered and implemented approximately 40 GPRS core networks to leading operators in Europe, USA, Asia and China, more than any other supplier.

Nokia will deliver its complete GPRS solution, which includes the Internet Protocol (IP) based core network infrastructure, the Nokia Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), the Nokia Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), the Nokia Charging Gateway, the Lawful Intercept Gateway (LIG), the Domain NameServer, Router/Firewall and Ethernet switches, service charging and provisioning solution and applications.

Tele Danmark is the principal provider of a full range of telecommunications services in Denmark and holds significant interests in a range of telecom companies across Northern and Continental Europe. Domestic activities include landline and cellular telephone services, data communications, Internet, leased lines, cable television and directory services. The total number of employees in the group (exclusive of associated enterprises) is17,464. Tele Danmark has DKK 62.2bn in assets (USD 8.6bn at the half year USD/DKK exchange rate of 7.20).
