IRVINE, Calif., August 14, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Communications chip maker Broadcom has aimed to shift focus from cable and computer chips to networks and data, video and voice transmission. Broadcom Corp.(Nasdaq:BRCM) continued with its furious takeover pace this week, agreeing to buy Silicon Spice Inc. for about $1.2 billion in stock. The purchase of the privately held company is Broadcom's 12th acquisition since June 1999, and takes the company a step closer to its goal of being a one-stop equipment and chip supplier to link computers, phones and televisions over high-speed networks. Silicon Spice, based in Mountain View, Calif., develops semiconductor technology. A lead developer of high density communication processors, the company has 126 employees and counts Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO) among its investors and clients.
"The acquisition of Silicon Spice and its communications processor technology leverages the installed base of our xChange Voice-over Internet Protocol software," Broadcom Chief Executive and President Henry Nicholas said. "This unique combination will enable Broadcom to provide the highest density packet telephony silicon and software solutions to our customers."
