Nokia has today launched the Nokia LiveSite platform, the world's first WCDMA implementation, which is compatible with the latest 3GPP standards for 3rd Generation networks. The Nokia LiveSite, available before the end of this year is a key building block for Nokia's operator customers, in introducing fully 3GPP standards compliant commercial 3rd Generation networks. These will become available from Nokia during the third quarter 2001.
Nokia LiveSite is a major step forward for operators in enhancing their Mobile Internet and Multimedia application evaluation and demonstration capabilities by introducing the 3GPP Release 99 compatible Nokia LiveSite platform. It will allow operators to develop, test and evaluate applications, such as mobile web-browsing, multimedia messaging and video telephony in a real 3G air interface environment.
Nokia intends to install the first of these platforms in Nokia's Mobile 3G Demonstration Centres in Europe and in other Nokia 3G test centres across the world. Nokia LiveSite platforms will also be delivered to Nokia customers before the end of this year, offering them a true 3GPP standards compliant application evaluation and demonstration environment.
"The strength of the Nokia LiveSite lies in its rapid adaptability to changes in standardisation and flexible upgrading of test configurations", says Eero Vallström, Vice President, WCDMA Business, Nokia Networks. "In practice, adaptability means that changes in standardisation can be implemented within only a few weeks delay, whereas flexibility enables easy integration of 3G core network elements into the platform."
Nokia has implemented experimental WCDMA field systems installed at facilities around the world, including China, Finland, and Japan. In addition, Nokia has built Mobile 3G Demonstration Centres for use by partner operators in Europe to undertake full evaluation and demonstration of 3rd generation applications in a completely live working environment.
Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60 000 people.

Notes to Editors:
Standards organizations and other related bodies have agreed to co-operate for the production of a complete set of globally applicable Technical Specifications for a 3rd Generation Mobile System based on the evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies supported by 3GPP partners (i.e., UTRA both FDD and TDD modes). The Project is entitled the “Third Generation Partnership Project” and is known as “3GPP”.
