Nokia to supply innovative radio access system to max.mobil in Austria

Nokia is to supply its innovative Nokia MetroHopper Radio for base station access to Austrian mobile operator max.mobil - a new customer for Nokia.

Nokia MetroHopper Radio is a wireless access link that uses the self-regulated 58GHz frequency band for transmission. This avoids the need for coordinated frequency planning, eliminating delays caused by frequency license applications or waiting for leased lines to become available.
The agreement also includes a full range of professional services.

Installation and commissioning is much faster than conventional access systems, which helps operators to roll out a network more quickly and cost effectively.

"Efficient radio transmission is critical in today's fast growing networks and Nokia's innovative MetroHopper system, will enable us to provide an improved service to our subscribers," said Georg Pölzl und Friedrich Radinger, CEO, max.mobil.

The Nokia MetroHopper Radio is compact and with its rectangular flat panel antenna, is unobtrusive allowing it to be deployed in urban areas unsuitable for conventional microwave radios. This simplifies site selection and enables mass site acquisition to substantially cut a network's implementation costs.

"The equipment supplied to max.mobil can be tailored for superior performance in any environment - from the dense city to open rural areas. We are very pleased to have begun working with max.mobil", said Urs Pennanen, Managing Director, Nokia Networks, Austria.

max.mobil is the biggest Austrian private mobile operator with 1.8 million subscribers. max.mobil.'s network offers a superior sound quality with its innovative high-end-technological network architecture. In 1999, max.mobil, which employs 1400 people, achieved a turnover of 9,2 bn ATS in its core business.

Notes to editors:
A further advantage of the 58GHz frequency band is its unique characteristic of high oxygen absorption, which allows very high re-use of the same frequency. Hundreds of transmission access points can be established per square kilometre to achieve a very high density network. The result is reliable access, which helps improve network quality and reduce subscriber churn.
