Nokia and Tellabs sign co-operation agreement to enhance multi-service mobile networks

Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Nokia Corporation, and Tellabs, the leading provider of managed base station transmission solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a strategic agreement to enhance ATM and IP transmission in second and 3rd Generation mobile and data networks.

The Memorandum of Understanding sets the framework for a multi-year agreement under which Nokia will market and sell fully interoperable system solutions for base station transmission, consisting of the Tellabs MartisDXX® product family and the Network Management System MartisDXX Manager. This will complement Nokia's current cellular transmission offering. Additionally, Tellabs will integrate and sell Nokia's leading edge Nokia Hopper microwave transmission products into its solutions for wireless operators and service provider customers globally.

The co-operation will enable Nokia to provide operators with an end-to-end managed, integrated mobile transmission platform, offering an evolution towards ATM and IP. Tellabs will provide its mobile and datacom transmission customers with the same platform as an independent solution. This will give customers the opportunity to migrate to an all IP network, while maintaining a carrier class service level.

"In today's market, interoperability and co-operation with the industry's leaders are important in streamlining the delivery of full system solutions to our customers, to enable the fastest time to market with new services," said Dr. J.T. Bergqvist, Senior Vice President, Nokia Networks. “This co-operation will combine the strengths of the leading players in transmission technology, for the provision of world-class solutions for all of our customers. This will bring an ideal complement to Nokia's IP Mobility networks for the era of 3G."

“This agreement extends our reach into the wireless market by partnering with an industry leader in wireless networks,” said Brian Jackman, President of Global Systems and Technology at Tellabs. “Working with Nokia enables us to better meet our customers’ expanding needs for 2G and 3G networks.”
