Nokia has today introduced Nokia mPlatform Solution, an open platform for operators and service providers to implement mobile Internet services. With Nokia mPlatform Solution as an enabling layer, operators and service providers can now start to build a trusted position with their mobile Internet portals and tailor new services according to market and consumer demand.
Nokia mPlatform Solution is a network and terminal independent solution working across various access methods from WAP and GRPS to 3G and fixed Internet technologies. It combines the key elements for offering new value-added messaging and information services for end-users. It includes core products, such as WAP gateways and profile directories; enhanced access solutions, such as proxy servers and authentication; intelligent middleware and customer specific solutions.
Nokia's new solution includes access and enabling functions and open application interfaces for rapid application development. An open application interface brings several significant advantages; it enables seamless services because applications are integrated to work together. Applications can be created within various developer communities and services can be easily mixed and matched to be market and user segment specific with both local and general content. Open application interfaces also utilizes the network assets, such as location, authentication and billing information.
"When moving towards 3G networks, mobile Internet usage is estimated to exceed traditional PC connections in 2003. While new network technologies will bring added value through higher bandwidth and handset capabilities, the robust and scaleable underlying solution is a critical part of mobile Internet as we head towards 3G ", says Pekka Pohjakallio, Director, Mobile Internet Applications, Nokia Networks. "Nokia mPlatform Solution enables operators and service providers a short time-to-market of new revenue generating services, increase the customer loyalty and trust while making a smooth transition to 3G."
Nokia mPlatform Solution is designed to increase the ease of use of value added services. For example, a subscriber may need to book a restaurant and theatre for the evening, receive confirmations for bookings, pay for the theatre tickets with a credit card and receive location based information with addresses and maps. All this can be done without multiple log-ins and PIN codes. In addition, subscribers will be able to choose services and customize their individual portals according to personal preferences.
With the new solution, Nokia can also provide full operational support, allowing the system to be managed effectively with the ability to charge as necessary. Nokia also offers business and systems integration consulting skills to support the solution’s implementation. Furthermore, based on the co-operation announced earlier this year, Cable & Wireless has formed an alliance with Nokia to offer hosted mobile internet services on the Nokia mPlatform Solution. The mPlatform Solution, located in Cable and Wireless' data centers, will provide fully-managed wireless Internet services to 2nd and 3rd generation mobile network operators, Internet service providers and large corporates.
