Nokia chosen by Telefónica Móviles in Spain as a 3G supplier for next-generation mobile network

Telefónica Móviles España, one of the largest mobile operators in Europe has selected Nokia as a key supplier of 3G core and advanced radio network for Telefónica's cutting-edge 3G network in Spain.

Telefónica Móviles aims to be one of the first operators in Europe to launch commercial 3G services in August 2001. By using Nokia's unique IP mobility core and radio access technology, the 3G network will enable piloting of new exciting seamless multimedia services in Spain. Nokia announced earlier this year it will be one of the the main suppliers for Telefónica's GPRS core network. Nokia's standards compliant GPRS system will enable operators to be the first to launch fully commercial GPRS services as existing second Generation networks evolve to 3rd Generation. Following launch of the service expected towards the end of this year, more than 12 million Telefónica subscribers in Spain will benefit from the introduction of new commercial GPRS applications.

"We are delighted to have been chosen as a vendor for the roll-out of Telefonica's 3G network. Telefónica and Nokia have been working together for the supply of network equipment since 1996 and Nokia intends to lead the Mobile Internet market which will enable our customers to offer the most advanced range of services to their subscribers," says Felix Quesada Gonzalez, Managing Director, Nokia Networks Spain. "Telefónica is one of the fastest growing operators in Europe, and this places us in an ideal position to work closely with them in meeting the demands of the Mobile Internet market place."
