Nokia Networks to begin manufacturing of network infrastructure in Brazil

Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Nokia (NYSE:NOK), today announced that it will begin local manufacturing of GSM base stations in co-operation with Celestica, in Brazil, enabling the company to compete in the regional GSM network market. The new operations will be established following Anatel’s (National Telecommunications Agency) decision in favour of the GSM 1800 MHz frequency band, scheduled to become effective in 2001.
In addition to the local manufacturing, Brazil will become the location of Nokia Networks’ headquarters for its entire Latin America operations, and new offices will be opened in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Nokia has been active in Latin America since 1990. In 1993, Nokia Mobile Phones started its operations in Brazil. Nokia has established offices in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for its infrastructure and mobile phones sales, employs over 1,500 people and has a mobile phone manufacturing facility in Manaus.
