Carrier1 Obtains Comprehensive Optical Network Coverage and Access Infrastructure Across Substantially All of UK

GERMANY, Jan. 23, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Carrier1 International S.A. (Nasdaq:CONE) (Neuer Markt:CJN) today announced that it has reached an in-principle agreement with Atlantic Telecom for 2.5 Gigabit capacity on their UK network covering the majority of the country with 48 points of presence.

This UK network overlays Carrier1s 1,300 kilometer multi-strand fibre optic network covering the Central and Southern parts of the country and including Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield. This high-speed, high-capacity fibre network should be lit over the next few months and will allow Carrier1 to manage its growing UK and pan-European traffic flows in the most cost efficient manner.

This extensive national footprint overlays our own high-speed optical network and allows us to manage our growing Internet business on net and ever closer to the traffics origination points. With multiple points of interconnection to the national incumbent, we will also be able to realize significant cost savings while at the same time substantially increasing our interconnect capacity, said Alex Schmid, Executive Vice President Internet Services.
