Nokia introduces the industry first multimedia messaging solution:

Nokia has today launched the Nokia Artuse (TM) MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) Center, a high-capacity platform for the next wave of mobile messaging. The new Nokia solution enables operators to introduce multimedia messaging services combining new rich content, such as audio and video clips, photographs and images with the traditional text messaging.

Nokia showcases multimedia messaging based on the Nokia Artuse (TM) MMS Center and the Nokia 9210 Communicator which has the add-on MMS application at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France. The Nokia Artuse (TM) MMS Center will be available for the operator market during the second quarter, 2001

"We are very proud to be the first in the market introducing the multimedia messaging solution that enable operators to differentiate and increase their service portfolio by offering highly appealing and popular messaging services enhanced with complete new ingredients,"said Pekka Salonoja, Vice President, Mobile Internet Applications, Nokia Networks,"The multimedia messaging concept is built on the tremendous success of Short Message Service. Messaging services are proven to be true mass market applications embracing the very basic, human need to share the personally relevant moments with friends and family instantly and conveniently

The Nokia Artuse MMS Center will enable the sending of multimedia messages from mobile terminal to mobile terminal. It will also support the messaging between mobile handset and Internet applications, such as e-mail. For example, the multimedia message can be sent from a mobile phone directly to the receiver's e-mail address. The Nokia Artuse (TM) MMS Center will also enable message delivery and notification reports and message sending to multiple receivers.

The Nokia Artuse MMS Center is a network-independent solution. It provides operators with the future proof migration path from traditional SMS (Short Message Service) to the highly advanced multimedia messaging applications that will be emerging with GRPS, EGDE and 3G technologies. Multimedia messaging is the industry-standardized 3G service and Nokia has been actively contributing the standardization work both in WAP Forum and 3GPP.

Nokia's multimedia messaging solution is an ideal tool for the superdistribution of user-generated content. Peer-to-peer distribution is becoming increasingly important and Nokia is enabling this in the mobile environment. New multimedia solution is a major step towards creating future interoperable services and applications with Nokia's Mobile Internet Technical Architecture providing a comprehensive blueprint for building the future mobile world.

The new Nokia solution is designed to take into account application development via an External Application Interface (EAIF). This interface provides the possibility to introduce a variety of add-on applications. For example, multimedia messages can be directed to a photo album on the Internet for later retrieval. The Nokia Artuse (TM) MMS Center also utilizes flexible billing system that enables operators to choose the charging of services according to their market and business plans.
