Senate Hearing to Highlight 2001 ASFSA Legislative Action Conference


ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 28, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, will convene a hearing on the morning of Tuesday, March 6, to receive the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) 2001 Legislative Issue Paper and hear from ASFSA President Marilyn Hurt on the issues of greatest concern to the Association's membership.

The Agriculture Committee hearing will occur on the third day of ASFSA's 29th annual Legislative Action Conference, titled "2001: A Legislative Odyssey." The conference will run from March 4 through March 7 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in downtown Washington, DC.

ASFSA's 2001 Legislative Issue Paper advocates: 1) legislation to re-establish the authority of the USDA Secretary to regulate the sale of all foods throughout the entire school throughout the school day; 2) legislation to create a comprehensive, coordinated nutrition education program; 3) improved cost determination and reimbursement for the After School Snack Program; and 4) a continuation and expansion of the McGovern/Dole International School Lunch Program.
