(San Francisco, CA – April 10, 2001) Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Internet Security Systems (ISS) (NASDAQ: ISSX), today introduced next generation Intrusion Detection for comprehensive network protection with the latest version of RealSecureTM for Nokia. With this newest release of ISS’ market leading RealSecure intrusion detection software tightly integrated on the purpose built, market leading network security platform, Nokia and ISS are together delivering the most sophisticated network Intrusion Detection System (IDS) on the market today.
According to the results from a recent Computer Crime and Security survey conducted jointly by Computer Security Institute (CSI) and FBI, 85% of respondents detected computer security breaches within the last twelve months and 90% of those attacked reported vandalism, while 64% of those respondents acknowledged financial losses due to computer breaches.
"Advances in security appliances represent a critical technological development and have made a significant impact in the market for service providers that deploy managed security services, forecasted by the Yankee Group to exceed $2.6 Billion by 2005", stated Matthew Kovar, Director of Security Solutions & Services at the Yankee Group. "Appliances are a requirement by organizations because of superior ease of use, deployment and manageability in relation to the more taxing multi-service security servers." Kovar added, "The migration to specific, purpose built appliances will continue to gain momentum as increasingly network and application services are moved to the Internet."
The Nokia/ISS relationship has delivered a purpose-built, plug and play, enterprise-class intrusion detection appliance, offering significant benefits over traditional intrusion detection deployment options. The combination of Nokia’s purpose-built platform, user friendly configuration and management utilities – the Nokia Network Voyager and Horizon Manager - with ISS’ Workgroup Manager console make the RealSecure for Nokia IDS appliance easy to deploy and the easiest-to-manage and most cost-effective intrusion detection solution on the market. Enterprises, VARs, and service providers will benefit from this breakthrough level of simplicity.
RealSecure for Nokia also includes key features such as X-Press Updates and Check Point OPSEC compliance. X-Press Updates (TM), developed by ISS’ X-Force security research team, assures RealSecure for Nokia is updated with the most current attack signatures and program updates. The RealSecure Workgroup Manager automatically checks for new updates, and pushes the update to RealSecure Sensors. RealSecure for Nokia also supports the most current OPSEC interface specification.
“Hackers have become increasingly more sophisticated and have been able to exploit new forms of attack such as Trojans or social engineering to gain access to private networks,” said Dan MacDonald, vice president, Nokia Internet Communications. “A sophisticated Intrusion Detection system like the RealSecure for Nokia appliance enables businesses of all sizes to confidently protect their networks from unauthorized access.”
“Intrusion detection is fundamental to ensuring the protection of critical digital assets,” added Steve Gant, vice president of new ventures for Internet Security Systems. “Our strategic relationship with Nokia, and the resulting continued enhancement of our appliance solution, will enable us to accelerate the delivery of intrusion detection solutions to an increasingly broadening and demanding market.”
The RealSecure for Nokia network intrusion detection appliance is a key component of Nokia’s award winning line-up of network security solutions designed to seamlessly integrate into an overall security architecture. IDS is critical to providing complete protection since it essentially begins where the firewall leaves off. Firewalls inspect connection-oriented aspects of data communications, while RealSecure inspects the extended contents of the packet header and data. The combination of firewalls and intrusion detection provide a very complementary security solution.
