TGS-NOPEC's East Shetland Basin 3D Non-Exclusive Survey

TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company (UK) Ltd. is pleased to announce the completion of acquisition for its 920 square kilometre non-exclusive ESB-3D seismic survey.

This survey provides the industry with modern and comprehensive 3D seismic data coverage over mainly previously non-surveyed acreage in UK Quadrants 2 and 3. The ESB-3D survey provides ties to the existing 3D data coverage located to the east of the survey area. The ESB-3D survey consists of approximately 920 km2 of full fold 3D data.

The survey outline covers both open and licensed acreage located in the East Shetland Basin and along the eastern edge of the East Shetland Platform within UK Quadrants 2 and 3. The survey areas also included parts of the "Transitional Shelf and Terrace' forming a fault-bounded terrace that is located structurally higher than the East Shetland Basin, but down thrown from the East Shetland Platform.

Within the survey area are the Heather oil field with its undeveloped satellites, and the Emerald field. The Cormorant, Lyell, Ninian and Dunbar oilfields are all located to the east of the survey area. Previous exploration has also resulted in several minor, so far undeveloped, oil discoveries, which all clearly indicate that this general area is highly prospective and includes a mature oil source.

The potential hydrocarbon plays to be considered are primarily synrift sands of Upper Jurassic age, and both stratigraphical and structural trapping mechanisms could be present. Other potential targets to be considered in this area are the traditional reservoirs of the Lower and Middle Jurassic. Triassic reservoirs could also form a new play within the survey area, as additional Triassic reserves have recently been proven both in the Heather area and in the Ninian area.

The ESB-MC-3D survey should greatly improve the seismic imaging of this area and thus provide the industry with a more detailed understanding of both the different depositional environmental conditions, particularly with regard to the distribution of the synrift Upper Jurassic sediments, and the structural development during rifting.
