SAN FRANCISCO (June 5, 2001) - Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today announced the company's plans for wide deployment of Java(TM) technology in its mobile terminals at the JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco. In his keynote speech, Mr. Pekka Ala-Pietilä, president of Nokia, made several announcements related to Java technology, including the announcement of the expected availability of the Nokia 9290 Communicator for the North American market. Mr. Ala-Pietilä also outlined Nokia's intent to deliver more than 50 million mobile terminals supporting the Java platform for all segments of the consumer market by the end of 2002 and double that number by the end of 2003. To facilitate 3rd party software development for Nokia's Java terminals, Nokia and Borland introduced the Jbuilder MobileSet, a tool that enables 3rd party software developers to effectively create applications for Nokia's future Java handsets.
Additionally, Nokia revealed its plans to introduce a revolutionary concept for complete personal connectivity for the North American market. The Nokia 9290 Communicator is the first product based on the Symbian operating system (OS) and PersonalJava in North America. The product is expected to be available for the GSM 1900 MHz networks in the market during the first half of 2002. Like its sister product, the Nokia 9210 Communicator for Europe and Asia, the new Communicator has a high quality display capable of showing 4,096 colors, a full keyboard, as well as extensive support for the most common office applications and data synchronization over SyncML.
The Nokia 9200 Communicator Series forms the first global and open platform for mobile third party applications. For example, applications such as Lotus Mobile Notes can now be used by corporations operating anywhere within the GSM footprint in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Application developers can also take advantage of the new global marketplace for their solutions.
"By bringing Java technology to the mobile phones and providing tools for application development Nokia has created an unprecedented opportunity for developers. Developers can increase the reach of their applications which in turn provides an opportunity to generate additional revenue,' said Pekka Ala-Pietilä during his keynote address at the JavaOne Conference. "I am fully confident that by working with the developer community and with wireless carriers, we are taking an important step toward the mobile world.'
'The Nokia 9210 Communicator has received a tremendous amount of interest and positive feedback from around the world. Both developers and business customers have expressed a great deal of interest in when we would bring this product to the American market. The Symbian OS with the Nokia platform design gives us a unique opportunity to leverage on the winning concept for complete personal connectivity. With the Communicator's introduction to the American Market beginning in the first half of 2002, both Symbian and Java developers will now be able to offer the same applications to a worldwide customer base.'
