Precise Biometrics Launches Unrivalled Fingerprint Reader for Physical Access Control for the U.S. Department Of Defense

LUND, Sweden, Oct. 31, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Precise Biometrics can now offer the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) a total solution for secure identification via fingerprints. Besides the company's existing IT security solutions, it now offers a physical access control system solution for the DoD's smart card security solution.

The Precise BioAccess(tm) SC is the world's first fingerprint reader for physical access control systems that support the DoD's Common Access Card -- a smart card security standard. The Common Access Card is a smart card that has started to be implemented for identification processing for 4.3 million DoD employees. They will use it to gain access to buildings, computers, and medical care.

The combination of IT security solutions and physical access control systems ensures that the same smart card can be used for access to doors and computers; this enables increased security and reduced costs.

The Precise BioAccess SC makes its debut on November 12-16, 2001 at Comdex Fall 2001 in Las Vegas -- one of the world's largest IT trade shows. The new product is the result of further development of Precise BioAccess(tm), the company's fingerprint reader for physical access control systems.

The product identifies individuals by their fingerprints. In practice, this means that authorization is linked to an individual rather than an access card or a PIN code. The product is based on Precise Match-on-Card(tm) technology, which means that the storing and matching of fingerprints takes place right on the card (e.g., a Common Access Card) rather than in a less secure environment such as a computer.

The product is easy to implement in existing and new physical access control systems and is thus very competitive when it comes to price.

"This is another huge step on our journey toward winning orders from the U.S. Department of Defense," said Christer Bergman, CEO, Precise Biometrics. "We've already established good contacts with the DoD, in conjunction with initiatives via ActivCard, our partner."

Precise Biometrics AB, Europe's leading biometrics company, markets in-house developed products and systems for biometric* identification using fingerprints. The products replace passwords, PIN codes and ID cards in IT, telecom and pass systems. Precise Biometrics was started in Lund, Sweden, in 1997 by Nils Bernhard, Marten Obrink and Christer Fahreaus and today has 60 employees. The company has its head office in Lund, Sweden, an associate office in Stockholm, and a subsidiary in Washington DC, U.S.A. The company's shares are quoted on the OM Stockholm Exchange's O-list.
