Nokia demonstrates its multimedia messaging solution for the first time in Spain with Telefónica Móviles

Nokia, in conjunction with Telefónica Móviles, has demonstrated multimedia messaging (MMS) at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference being held from November 19th to 21st in Barcelona. This is the first time the advanced messaging capabilities of MMS have been shown over a live network in Spain with the Nokia multimedia messaging platform.

The multimedia messaging shown live at the conference gave attendees a first-hand demonstration of the end-to-end capabilities of multimedia messaging, which can include advanced messaging services such as the sending of digital images, graphics and sounds between mobile terminals.

To demonstrate some of these services at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference, Nokia made use of a Nokia MMSC (Multimedia Service Centre), connected to Telefónica Móviles' commercial network.

"This demonstration highlights the wonderful capabilities of multimedia messaging," said Félix González Quesada, Managing Director, Customer Operations, Nokia Networks. "Multimedia messaging will be pivotal in the future of mobile services by setting the stage for even more advanced services to come. We feel that - based on the success of short message service -- there is a ready-made market for sending messages made up of text with images, video and other media. "

"Besides these technologies, the demonstration also highlights the collaboration we have with a customer like Telefónica Móviles. We have worked closely together in getting this demonstration off the ground and making it a complete success," he added.

Luis Lada, Chairman and CEO of Telefónica Móviles, S.A., said his company has high expectations regarding the MMS services: "This technology will be one of the drivers of the mobile telephony industry in the near future," he said, adding: "Telefónica Móviles is preparing the commercial launch of multimedia messaging services based on GPRS during the first half of 2002."

At the same time, Lada stressed the high degree of cooperation between Telefónica Móviles and Nokia in the definition and the tests of services based on multimedia messaging.
