(HSL) is today announcing the GMI (Global Messaging Infrastructure) for SMS that allows high throughput two-way messaging between wireless applications and mobile telephones. The GMI provides to wireless developers the much in-demand technical capability and infrastructure that is necessary for wireless Instant Message (IM), information pull and push, media delivery and telemetry applications using SMS.
Up until recently, interaction with wireless applications from mobile telephones has been restricted to the subscribers of an individual network, effectively locking an application into a particular mobile network's subscribers. This had previously limited the user base of an application to the subscribers of a single network and prevented the application reaching subscribers of other networks. Where an application had been deployed globally, it would rely on low throughput and unreliable SIM-based wireless modem solutions.
With the GMI from HSL wireless applications are able to interactively communicate with mobile telephones on any covered mobile network in the world. This significantly increases the reach and appeal of a wireless application to the vast majority of mobile networks worldwide. This new service from HSL will be available under the Advanced Services product offering.
