Nokia makes world's first IP packet data call with its 3G WCDMA solution based on the final commercial standard

Nokia has successfully made the first 3G WCDMA packet data calls between its commercial network infrastructure and terminals in its laboratories in Finland. The Nokia 3G WCDMA network and terminal used were based on the commercial standard level known as 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) Release 99 June 2001 version. This was the first time that packet data has been transmitted end-to-end on a commercial system based on the above mentioned commercial standard.

"This milestone, which we have now reached as the first supplier in the world, is an important achievement proving the steady progress of our 3G WCDMA system," says Dr. J T Bergqvist, Senior Vice President, Nokia Networks. "Though we had already achieved data call speeds of up to 384 kbit/s through a WCDMA system two years ago, this step is the most important one so far to enable commercial end-to-end network launches during the second half of this year. Therefore, when assessing the capability of different suppliers, knowing the implemented standard version is of pivotal importance," he continues.

In this network integration and verification milestone, data packets containing user data were sent from a Nokia WCDMA terminal to a 3G packet switched core network, and from the packet core network to the terminal. The 3G packet switched core will be the heart of future data intensive communications in 3G networks, and now this functionality has been for the first time integrated into the rest of the network with proven end-to-end capability.
