Nokia proposes an initiative for Open IP Base Station Architecture

Nokia, as a world-leading mobile infrastructure vendor, today announced an initiative to jointly define a revolutionary Open IP Base Station Architecture. The architecture is intended for use in next-generation All-IP radio access networks supporting multiple mobile network standards. Nokia invites other industry players to join this initiative to leverage innovation and economies through open architecture.

Open IP Base Station Architecture will lead to modular base stations with open internal interfaces. This will allow manufacturers to focus their R&D efforts on their core competencies and buy selected base station modules from each other and from other module vendors.

The real beneficiaries of the initiative are the end-users of the forthcoming Mobile Internet services. The initiative will allow faster development of innovative and more cost-effective base stations, enabling earlier and lower-cost introduction of new technologies and services by the operators.

The Open IP Base Station Architecture initiative will not compete with, but rather complement, the work done by existing standardization organizations (for example, 3GPP). Base stations developed using the Open IP Base Station Architecture will be fully compatible with standard radio interfaces, such as WCDMA and EDGE. The initiative will focus on the base station architecture and internal interfaces.

Nokia is inviting other industry players, infrastructure vendors and module suppliers to join it in forming a Special Interest Group to drive the initiative.

"The Open IP Base Station Architecture will revolutionize base station development," says Dr. JT Bergqvist, Senior Vice President, IP Mobility Networks, Nokia Networks. "It will allow next-generation All-IP base stations to be built using best-of-breed shared platforms and modules, available on an open market, whilst letting network suppliers differentiate on system and network-element levels. Expected to contribute to bringing the network costs per capacity down, this initiative is a pivotal element in enabling large-scale Mobile Internet service usage at affordable prices."

Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed broadband and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people. Nokia is a broadly held company with listings on six major exchanges.
