Nokia continues to demonstrate industry leadership at the 3GSM World Congress with All-IP network strategy and products announcements

Open All-IP network strategy
The open All-IP network architecture strategy announced by Nokia Networks will benefit the entire communications networking industry by driving openness in all critical future product designs across the industry in order to leverage R&D efficiency and time-to-market. The strategy will empower the industry to offer consumers new mobile services in the most cost-efficient manner possible. As part of this strategy, Nokia Networks will develop module products and sell them to other mobile-network equipment vendors.

A pivotal activity of this strategy is the Open IP Base Station Architecture initiative announced today by Nokia. The initiative aims to define a revolutionary Open IP Base Station Architecture for use in next-generation All-IP radio-access networks supporting multiple mobile-network standards. Open IP Base Station Architecture will lead to modular base stations with open internal interfaces. At the same time, Nokia and Siemens announced joint support for a global open standard for broadband wireless networks targeted at achieving a single worldwide standard. This standard will combine the best features of the IEEE 802.16, the first non-proprietary standard for broadband wireless access, and the ETSI BRAN standard.

In addition to these market-making announcements, Nokia launched a wide variety of network infrastructure products. The Nokia LTX product family, the industry's first high-power multi-carrier linear transceiver (LTX) family of base station modules is part of the Open IP Base Station Architecture initiative. Nokia also launched four new products for WCDMA: the Nokia MetroSite Piccolo WCDMA Base Station, the Nokia Advanced Indoor Radio, the Nokia RealTilt for WCDMA, and the Nokia mPosition for WCDMA. In addition, Nokia introduced the compact and high-capacity Nokia BSC3i base station controller.

Nokia also announced the Nokia FlexiFamily(TM) platform, a new, uniform platform technology for All-IP mobility networks. Based on open standards, the carrier-grade FlexiFamily will be the foundation for the cost-efficient All-IP systems that will accelerate the future development of the entire mobile industry. The first members of the FlexiFamily to be introduced will be the open carrier-grade Nokia FlexiServer(TM) and Nokia FlexiGateway(TM) platforms.
