Fujian Mobile Communications of China chooses Nokia's mPosition for its mobile location services

Nokia Neu Commtech Co., Ltd. and Fujian Mobile Communications Company have signed a contract for the supply and deployment of the Nokia mPosition solution for mobile location services. Nokia Neu Commtech Co., Ltd. is Nokia's Chinese joint venture and one of the leading companies in China for mobile data services.

With Nokia mPosition, Fujian MCC will be able to implement mobile location services in its GSM network. This deployment of the Nokia mPosition solution in Fujian province further demonstrates mPosition's ability to implement advanced mobile location services.

Under the agreement, Nokia will provide the Nokia Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC), Serving Mobile Location Center (SMLC), and other network products that make up the mPosition solution. In addition, the contract calls for installation and roll-out. Deliveries have started, with deployment completed in the cities of Fuzhou and Xianmen. Deployment will be completed throughout the Fujian MCC network during the second quarter of 2002. Fujian serves 4.8 million mobile subscribers in Fujian province.

"With location-based services, mobile operators are realizing the full potential of mobility by providing a service offering that changes with a user's location," says Malcolm Arnold, General manager of Nokia Neu Commtech Co., Ltd. "Fujian MCC is clearly demonstrating that China is in the vanguard of this new technology. We are extremely pleased to be working closely with Fujian MCC to showcase both its vision for services and our solution for making this a reality."

"As a key value-added service for 3G, location-based services can also be achieved with 2G and 2.5G networks," says Weimin Yang, Ph.D., Fujian MCC. "Location-based service will generate rich profits for operators. More importantly, it will improve the operation concepts and the operator's mode needed in promoting new business. It has significant importance in improving network and service quality and in enhancing competitiveness."
