Nokia introduces exciting new mobile phones with color, MMS, polyphonic MIDI sounds, and Java (TM) technology

Nokia today launched 6 new products at the CeBIT fair in Hanover, Germany and at a parallel "Style My Mobile World" event held in Melbourne, Australia. Nokia's new terminal introductions include the company's third color screen product, as well as products with Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) capability, Java(TM) 2 Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) support, polyphonic MIDI sounds, and triband functionality.

Speaking at the Nokia press conference at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, Matti Alahuhta, President, Nokia Mobile Phones, emphasized the importance of open and standards based industry collaboration:

"This spring marks a significant time for our industry, as many of our technology promises start materializing in the hands of consumers. With the new terminals supporting Multimedia Messaging (MMS) and Java technology, the user experience is greatly enhanced and customers will be able to grasp what the mobile world is all about. In order to manage the complexity and match the expectations of the future, the leading companies in the mobile industry started the Open Mobile Architecture initiative in November last year, and we have been very pleased to see it gathering momentum. With over 30 companies now expressing their support for the principles of open- and standards-based solutions and multivendor interoperability, we are confident that an open and global mobile services market will take off."

The latest member in Nokia's line of fashion phones, the Nokia 7210 features a high-resolution color screen with 4096 colors, MMS capability, support for downloading Java applications, and a stereo FM radio. Nokia's newest fashion phone is also a globetrotter, functioning on 5 continents wherever GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 networks are available.

The Nokia 6310i, Nokia's newest classic category phone, is a tri-band mobile phone operating globally in GSM 900/1800/1900 networks and providing mobile Internet access via WAP over GPRS, fast data connections over HSCSD, and enhanced connectivity with integrated Bluetooth technology. The Nokia 6310i also enables the downloading of personal Java applications.

Nokia today also introduced two new phones for its expression category: the Nokia 3510, for European, African, and Asia-Pacific markets, the Nokia 3410 for European and African markets and, as well as a basic category Nokia 3315 for Asia-Pacific markets.

The Nokia 3510 is the company's first expression category phone to have GPRS, polyphonic (MIDI) sounds and Value Added Services (VAS) over Multimedia Messaging (MMS) capability. VAS over MMS will bring new dimensions to personal communications with the possibility to receive rich value added services like screen savers and polyphonic ring tones.

The Nokia 3410, in turn, features Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) support for downloading exciting and fun new applications. It is the company's first mass-market product open for independent software developers to offer Java applications to consumers. Other new features include a 3D graphics engine enabling three dimensional animated screensavers and a Picture Editor for personal picture message creation.

The Nokia 3315 brings a new addition to Nokia's range of basic phones, offering easy-to-use messaging and enhanced personalization features. The array of personalization and messaging features include a Picture Editor which allows users to create and personalise picture messages, personalised SMS alerts, SMS chat, multiple SMS sending, profile logos, four exciting games, and downloadable (OTA) graphics, icons and ring tones. The Nokia 3315 is also equipped with an enhanced Chinese phonebook and Thai input.

Nokia today also welcomed a new member to its Communicator Series, the Nokia 9210i Communicator. The new communicator is packed with a full set of new applications and enlarged internal memory capacity. It is the first Nokia device to feature a web browser supporting JavaScripts (TM), a Flash Player for the playback of Macromedia flash animations, and a RealOne Player enabling real-time video and audio streaming in HSCSD networks. For the first time corporate users will also have the convenience of enhanced security with Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability.

Five of the six new products will be available during the second quarter, and one -the Nokia 7210 - in early third quarter, 2002.

In Nokia's press conference today, Nokia and RealNetworks announced the inclusion of the RealOne Player, with support for 3GPP media formats, RealAudio, and RealVideo, as a standard feature on Nokia's Series 60 platform and Nokia phones based on the Symbian OS. This co-operation will enable millions of mobile consumers worldwide to enjoy live and on-demand access to digital audio and video for information and entertainment.

Nokia further announced a multi-year agreement with Lucasfilm to bring the adventure of the Star Wars saga to the mobile world via Club Nokia. Nokia phone owners will be able to enjoy exciting interactive services and download Star Wars-related content to their phones through Club Nokia, such as still and animated graphics, traditional and polyphonic ring tones, MMS services and a variety of mobile games, including Java games. Star Wars themed mobile services will be available from www.club.nokia.com in Europe and Africa and across most of Asia. Please note that the MMS related services are dependent on the network as well as on the compatibility of the devices used and the content formats supported.

In addition to new Nokia terminals supporting MMS and Java applications, Nokia is showcasing respective, state-of-the-art offerings in the field of mobile software. They illustrate Nokia's commitment to uniform standards and an open mobile architecture, driving both globally interoperable platforms and terminal diversity. To accelerate this development, Nokia is licensing its client software components and platform to handset vendors as source-code products, allowing manufacturers to cut their own R&D costs. Nokia also offers a wide range of server-based solutions to operators and service providers who wish to ensure the richest set of mobile services for their customers.

Nokia's end-to-end MMS solution fully supports both person-to-person multimedia messaging as well as content services. Nokia's Series 60, built on the Symbian OS and utilizing key technologies such as MMS, WAP and Java, will bring an easy-to-use platform for one-hand operated smart phones featuring color screens and compelling applications.

Furthermore, Forum Nokia, the service for developers of mobile applications worldwide, is showcasing a comprehensive portfolio of tools and solutions for content and application creation. These include Nokia Tradepoint, a business-to-business marketplace for add-on applications targeted at operators and service providers. Additionally, Forum Nokia has invited more than 40 independent developers to Nokia's booth at CeBIT to introduce their most innovative mobile applications.

Nokia Networks introduced the Nokia D500 Multiservice Access Platform, allowing a transition from the present single service Fast Internet Access to a broader multi-service model in fixed broadband networks. Nokia Networks also launched the Nokia ASR 2020 leased-line IP edge router for ETSI markets. The Nokia ASR 2020 can aggregate huge volumes of multiservice traffic in an extremely compact size, while also bringing true industry-leading 'five-nines' (99.999%) service availability to IP service networks.

Club Nokia is an on-line community and loyalty program for Nokia phone owners. Today, it offers services to owners of Nokia mobile phones in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. The Club Nokia web and WAP services can be accessed once the Nokia phone is registered with Club Nokia. In the near future Club Nokia services will be available to Nokia phone owners globally.
