Pointsec Mobile Technologies Awarded Important Security Certification

FIPS 140 Validation Regarded by U.S. Government and International Corporation as the de facto Security Standard for Computer Technologies; Pointsec Mobile Technologies, a Subsidiary of Protect Data, Makes New Achievements

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 3, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Pointsec(r) PC 4.1 encryption security solution has achieved the FIPS140-1 validation for encryption software by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This means that the product is approved for use by U.S. and Canadian government agencies.

For a security solution, such as Pointsec(r), to achieve the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) certification, the solution had to be tested against eleven separate requirements. Pointsec Mobile Technologies has been working with the certification process for the past fifteen months in order to accomplish this goal. The rigorous testing procedure pledges a high level of security and assures customers of a high quality cryptographic product. FIPS 140 is considered to be one of the most influential computer industry related standards.

Vertical Integrations, Inc., a subcontractor to the Department of Defense (DOD), recently evaluated FIPS certified full disk encryption products before making recommendations about which security solution the DOD should purchase.

"The final testing and evaluation was between Pointsec and a competitor's product. We found Pointsec to be the superior product. Pointsec's professional services and customer care teams were also a deciding factor in our recommendation to the DOD," said Kevin M. Siek, CTO, Vertical Integrations Inc.

FIPS are a set of standards that describe everything from document processing to defining requirements for security products for use within U.S. and Canadian government agencies. FIPS 140-1 sets the security requirements that have to be met in order for security products to be deployed within government agencies, and as such, has become the acknowledged and accepted de facto standard for cryptographic implementations both in the United States and Internationally. Founded in 1901, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Commerce Department's Technology Administration.

"Achieving the FIPS 140 certification from NIST is a significant achievement for Pointsec. The FIPS certification validates the quality of the Pointsec PC product and assures all our satisfied clients that they have selected a trustworthy security solution," said Thomas Bill, CEO, Pointsec Mobile Technologies AB.
