Nokia: Volume impact of a failing display component is marginal

During the last days, there have been some erroneous and misleading reports regarding alleged defects in some Nokia phone models. In response to these reports, the company summarizes the following facts related to the issue of a failing mobile phone display component:

In early 2002, Nokia identified a component quality problem with one of its display suppliers. Nokia immediately stopped using the failing component and replaced it with components from other suppliers. The problem was solved in February.

The faulty component affects a small proportion of Nokia models produced between October 2001 - January 2002. In relation to Nokia´s yearly sales volume, the share of the affected phones is marginal. The component problem affects mostly the Nokia 8210 and 8260 models. However, the failing display component has to an extent also been used in some other Nokia models.

All costs of this quality problem will be covered by the component supplier.

The failing component causes the display of the affected phone to blank out after some time in use. The blanking out of the display does not affect the functionality of the phone. The problem can be corrected by replacing the display.

So far Nokia phones with failing displays have mainly been found in Scandinavia, Germany, Australia, and the U.S. Phones with problems related to the failing display component will be repaired free of charge as a standard warranty procedure.
