ONI Systems Optical Platforms Qualified by EMC Corporation as E-Lab Tested

Information Storage Solution Deployed At Customer Sites

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 16, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- ONI Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS) today announced that ONI's ONLINE7000 and ONLINE9000 optical transport platforms have been qualified by EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) as E-Lab Tested(tm), the industry's most comprehensive testing program. The qualification process included testing of both Fibre Channel and ESCON with ONI's ONWAVE(tm) Data Multiplexer and ONWAVE ESCON Multiplexer and EMC Symmetrix(r) and CLARiiON(r) information storage systems and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF(tm)) and MirrorView(tm) remote mirroring software. Additionally, ONI and EMC have entered into a worldwide Cooperative Support Agreement to address joint customer service and support.

"ONI has been working closely with leading storage vendors and our customers to define requirements and test solutions for storage internetworking. This focus has allowed ONI to introduce capabilities far ahead of the competition and deliver solutions to address its customers' current and future business requirements," said Peter Evans, senior vice president of Marketing at ONI Systems. "Networking and storage requirements are quite similar, focusing on scalability, density, manageability, reliability and flexibility. Today, we are able to offer EMC's customers a carrier-class networking solution with up to four times the scalability and twelve times the service density of competing products. In addition, we are able to deliver advanced performance monitoring capabilities for these services via an integrated software platform that allows our customers to leverage a robust solution with rich management functionality."

Recently, ONI and EMC have secured customers across the globe with key wins in Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States. These customers selected a qualified solution to provide a foundation for business continuance. In each case, enterprise customers deployed EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and service providers leveraged ONI's ONLINE(tm) platforms to allow the enterprises to implement EMC's SRDF remote mirroring software.

"EMC's E-Lab Tested qualification process is a series of exhaustive performance and reliability tests to ensure the interoperability of all components that make up a multi-vendor information storage network," said Chuck Hollis, vice president of Markets and Products at EMC. "E-Lab Tested assures customers that ONI's optical platforms are fully interoperable with EMC information storage systems and software, enabling customers to deploy heterogeneous storage networks quickly, reliably and cost-effectively."

"Together, EMC and ONI provide some of the most advanced feature sets available within their respective markets, which in turn allows customers to take advantage of a 'best-in-breed' solution set for business continuity. This relationship is significant as both companies have not only demonstrated interoperability, but have also secured customers and executed agreements," said Robert Montague, managing director at Dain Rauscher Wessels.

"We are pleased to build our relationship with EMC and other leading storage vendors as the market for qualified storage solutions continues to expand. With our partnerships, our technological innovations, and our commitment to customer service, ONI is establishing itself as a leader in the storage internetworking market," said Bob Jandro, executive vice president of Global Sales and Services at ONI Systems.
