Under the agreement, Nokia will supply a complete end-to-end MMS solution, including the Nokia Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), the Nokia Terminal Gateway, the Nokia Terminal Management Server, the Nokia Artuse WAP Gateway, and other gateways products.
The Nokia Terminal Gateway allows users of non-MMS legacy phones to enjoy MMS as well. When multimedia messages are sent to legacy phones, their users receive an SMS notification directing them to a Web site where they can access their MMS message.
In addition to the MMS solution equipment, Nokia will provide implementation and integration services, and the Nokia KeyCareTM Package, which maintains the competitiveness of the MMS solution.
"Telefónica Móviles has once again demonstrated its commitment to maintaining a leadership position in innovative technology," says Ignacio Camarero, CTO of Telefónica Móviles. "The development of MMS services is proof that we want to bring our customers closer to the products and services that are taking us ever nearer to the next generation of mobile phone services - one in which the increased capacity of networks will make it possible to offer a greater number and variety of applications, combined with higher transmission speed. These developments will, in turn, lead to greater use of mobile phone services by customers."
"We are very pleased to be working with one of the world's premiere operators to deliver multimedia service," says Félix González-Quesada, CEO, Nokia Networks Spain. "By choosing the Nokia MMS solution for all of its affiliate networks, Telefónica Móviles has demonstrated the confidence that it places in the Nokia vision -- and practical application -- of MMS. We are extremely motivated to help make MMS a life-changing user experience for all of Telefónica Móviles' customers around the world."
Nokia has among the industry's longest and most extensive experience in MMS, having piloted commercial systems since the third quarter 2001. Nokia has delivered its MMS solution since December 2001. Nokia's other MMS milestones include the world's first-ever MMS roaming and interconnection, demonstrated in February 2002.
Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed broadband and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet, Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people.
