Nokia is to deliver a GSM network expansion to Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited (AIS), in a deal valued at USD 40 million. The deal is in response to increasing demand in voice and non-voice usage. AIS currently has the highest market share in Thailand.
The network expansion enables AIS to handle the continually increasing number of GSM subscribers as well as respond to demand for a broad array of communication services currently launched, such as games, Multimedia Message Service and fast and efficient Internet access for users countrywide. Delivery and installation of the network expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2002.
Mr. Wichian Mektrakarn, Vice President Engineering of Advanced Info Service Plc. explains: “I am convinced that this network expansion not only provides more convenience for service users as our major target, but also strengthens AIS’ position in mobile phone business in Thailand."
"Given our highest potential and widest network coverage, advanced technologies will allow us to perfectly provide voice and non-voice services for customers with the highest cost efficiency. The cooperation between Nokia and AIS will enable us to timelessly serve the rapid increase of subscribers reaching almost 1 million per month at present," he adds.
Under the contract, Nokia will deliver GSM network equipment and maintenance service to AIS, including Nokia UltraSite Base Stations that well support EDGE, HSCSD, GPRS and WCDMA technology, empowering AIS to more efficiently manage and provide data transmission service that has exponentially risen in demand.
In addition to network equipment, Nokia will provide network planning, installation, and project management for efficient network ramp-up as well as optimization, training and care services to help maintain the competitiveness of the network.
"This agreement further underlines our excellent long relationship with AIS by ensuring its network operates efficiently today and evolves smoothly towards future 3G services with Nokia's leading technology," says Pekka Mielonen, Director Customer Operations, Nokia Thailand.
"Nokia is committed to providing concrete service support for AIS. As well as supplying innovative and reliable technology, Nokia is providing efficient delivery and care services to help secure their technology and consumer service evolution," adds Mielonen
