ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., Oct. 28, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) has chosen Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) AN/ALQ-135 radar jammer to protect its fleet of F-15K aircraft under a contract worth $160 million.
Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector was awarded a contract by The Boeing Company in September to develop and manufacture AN/ALQ-135 radar jammers for the ROKAF's F-15K fighter program. Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division will design and develop AN/ALQ-135 radar jammers for 40 F-15K aircraft, with the potential for additional jammer orders for as many as 40 more aircraft over the next decade. System deliveries under this initial contract are expected to be completed by early 2008.
"The AN/ALQ-135 radar jammer will be updated for the F-15K, and will include technological advances such as miniature microwave power module transmitters and PowerPC processors," said Ev Pratt, vice president of Electronic Warfare programs at Northrop Grumman. "These advances will provide substantial volume reduction, weight savings and reliability improvements over current fielded AN/ALQ-135 systems."
The AN/ALQ-135 is an internally mounted radar countermeasures system originally designed and developed for the USAF's F-15 fleet. The AN/ALQ-135 is currently fielded on all F-15C/E and F-15S combat-coded aircraft for the USAF and the Royal Saudi Air Force.
The AN/ALQ-135 is part of the F-15K's integrated Tactical Electronic Warfare Suite (TEWS), a state-of-the-art EW protection system designed to give allied pilots software-controlled protection against directed RF threats. TEWS also includes the AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispenser and the AN/ALR-56C(V)1 radar warning receiver, both produced by BAE SYSTEMS.
Northrop Grumman's AN/ALQ-135 ECM system has now operated in thousands of hours of combat, beginning with Desert Storm and continuing through operations in the Balkans, Kosovo, and now Afghanistan, without a single aircraft loss due to threats covered by the ECM system.
Headquartered in Baltimore, Md., Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of defense electronics systems including airborne radar systems, navigation systems, electronic warfare systems, precision weapons, airspace management systems, air defense systems, communications systems, space systems, marine systems, oceanic and naval systems, logistics systems, and automation and information systems.
