Nokia M2M solution approved for use on AT&T Wireless GSM/GPRS network

LAS VEGAS –The first commercial adoption of the Nokia M2M (Machine-to-Machine) solution in the United States by Nokia customer Opto 22 and remote asset management solution provider Professional Consulting Services (PCS), mark a milestone in the adoption path of wireless machine to machine communications.  AT&T Wireless, a leading provider of wireless services to enterprise customers nationwide, is the first wireless carrier to approve the Nokia 31 M2M Connectivity Terminal for use on its GSM/GPRS network.

The Nokia M2M solution, designed to wirelessly enable communications between devices, represents a simple, reliable and cost-effective way for enterprises to remotely connect and monitor equipment without the expense of a dedicated wired network. While the Nokia M2M hardware creates simple and cost effective connectivity solution, globally proven GSM wireless networks provide a widespread and reliable wireless backbone. The Nokia M2M solution consists of the Nokia 31 Connectivity Terminal, the Nokia M2M Gateway, and the Nokia M2M Application Development Kit.

Opto 22, a manufacturer of hardware and software products for automation, and PCS have recently begun implementing the United States’ first commercial application of the Nokia M2M solution that offers an example of the innovation and flexibility that can be delivered to a variety of enterprise customers. “We’ve been looking for ways to simplify the deployment of large scale monitoring solutions,” said Steve Pazol, president of PCS. “The Nokia M2M platform helps reduce the complexity of communicating with remotely distributed devices. We expect this to be the first of many Nokia M2M-based projects.”

BioLab, Inc., one of the world’s largest providers of water treatment products for the recreational and industrial markets, has contracted with PCS to provide software and project management and Opto 22 to deliver controllers integrating the Nokia M2M solution for swimming facilities serviced by BioLab. In this application, sensors monitor the condition of the water in the pool, including pH and sanitizer levels, water treatment chemicals are automatically dispensed, and these activities are then reported back to the PCS operations center via the Nokia 31 Connectivity Terminal and Nokia M2M Gateway. The results of this wirelessly delivered data then allows BioLab customers to determine if a service call is needed, dispatch that service call, and monitor the usage and even change the settings for individual chemicals, information that lets BioLab control its supply chain in real time.

“Our business is both service and material intensive, so remote monitoring made sense for us as a way to increase efficiencies. However, the outdoor location of swimming pools made it challenging to connect monitoring equipment over conventional fixed lines in the past,” said Steve Clark, Director of Commercial Development and BioLab Commercial Water for BioLab. “The wireless solution provided by PCS, Opto 22 and Nokia allows us to install equipment almost anywhere that we need, and gives us the data that we need to effectively run our business. Our customers will also benefit greatly with the increased access to information about their systems and operations.”

At COMDEX Fall 2002, Nokia and Opto22 will be conducting a hands-on demonstration of the power and flexibility that the Nokia M2M solution can bring to a wide variety of enterprises. Attendees who are interested in this demonstration can visit the Nokia booth #L-3208 during normal show hours.
