Nokia makes Brazil’s first EDGE data call with commercial equipment at 3GSM Americas

São Paulo, December 4th, 2002 – Nokia made today, during 3GSM Americas, its first EDGE data call in Brazil using commercial equipment. This technology enables mobile phone carriers to offer their customers services that combine high-speed voice, audio, video and text.

To introduce its EDGE services, Nokia put together an experimental network based on EDGE technology (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), with commercial hardware, software, and handset.  The demo is using Nokia UltraSite Indoor base station and the Nokia 6200, the world’s first EDGE handset. This infrastructure enables voice and data streaming, including video, with a real speed from 60 to 90 kbit/s.

Nokia’s GSM/EDGE platform offers carriers a smooth and economic evolution into third generation technology. Current TDMA and CDMA operators that decide to go to GSM can now go directly to EDGE and start offering 3G services.

Third generation services enable the user to download content or applications, exchange messages combining audio, video and text, enabling XHTML browsing and Java applications, and access the Internet or Intranet twice as fast as conventional fixed calls: initial speed of up to 118 Kbps as opposed to 56 Kbps.

GSM
GSM is the world’s most widely used mobile telephony technology. By October 2002, there were 464 GSM carriers distributed in over 190 countries, providing services to more than 760 million users, who represent approximately 70% of all digital telephony subscribers.

Nokia UltraSite EDGE Indoor Base station
Nokia UltraSite EDGE Indoor is a high-capacity base station that can offer comprehensive and economical coverage and capacity for voice and data services. It supports GSM/EDGE and WCDMA, enabling both technologies combined in a single cabinet. It can help the evolution of existing networks into the third generation.

Nokia 6200
Nokia 6200 is the world’s first handset to support GSM/EDGE. The phone has a high-resolution color screen, developed for image display and XHTML navigation. It has predictive text entry and ergonomic design, with large touch keys to facilitate sending messages, including multimedia messages (MMS). Users of this model will also count on polyphonic sound for ring tones, integrated FM radio and recorder. Nokia 6200 is tri-band (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 MHz) and offers a maximum speed of 118 Kbps.

EDGE
EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is a GSM evolution. The first commercial products (like the Nokia 6200) will enable voice and data traffic at a speed of up to 118 Kbps. The maximum data speed of EDGE technology is 473 kbit/s. GSM network evolution to EDGE will enable faster data exchange using the existing bands of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz.
