Nokia, Ikanos, Zyxel, and Hyundai Networks - cooperate to deliver interoperable VDSL-DMT systems

Fremont, Calif.—Four leading broadband equipment suppliers—Nokia, Ikanos Communications, ZyXEL Communications Corp. (TAI:2391.TW), and Hyundai Networks, Inc.—today announced that they are co-operating to deliver interoperable end-to-end solutions based on Very-High-Data-Rate Digital Subscriber Line-Discrete Multi-Tone (VDSL-DMT) technology for global markets.  The co-operation of these leading DSL equipment and chipset suppliers will enable carriers around the globe to deliver very high-speed broadband services across networks that employ VDSL-DMT products from the different companies. This announcement marks a milestone for VDSL-DMT, because it is essential that interoperable end-to-end VDSL solutions are readily available. This will ensure that carriers/operators in all regional markets have access to VDSL-DMT solutions for the mass-market deployment of very high bandwidth “triple-play” services.

“Interoperability of VDSL-DMT is an important requirement for ensuring the overall growth of the worldwide DSL market and the deployment of very high-bandwidth media services such as digital TV or video services,” said Markku Hynninen, Vice President of Broadband Access at Nokia’s Broadband Systems division.  “Working on interoperability with other VDSL–DMT equipment and chip vendors will ensure our leadership position of the Nokia D500 DSLAM in the emerging VDSL-DMT market.”
“The focus of earlier interoperability initiatives was to demonstrate interoperability between DMT-based chipsets that could meet the evolving international standards for VDSL. However, system-level interoperability is of greater importance in enabling VDSL-DMT based service deployment,” said Richard Sekar, vice president of marketing at Ikanos.  “The system-level interoperability initiative will ensure the DSLAM and CPE components are fully interoperable and through our partnership with Nokia, Hyundai, and ZyXEL it will enable the mass deployment of very high speed broadband services.”

Carrier Interest in VDSL-DMT Is Heating Up
Carriers worldwide are seeking to deploy interoperable VDSL-DMT as a way to offer high value, high-bandwidth media & data services to their customers.  In addition, DMT is the VDSL transmission technology of choice worldwide, as products that employ DMT line coding fit seamlessly into carriers’ existing DMT infrastructure, and have robust performance in challenging local loop conditions.
“The broadband market is growing rapidly in Asia and especially in Korea, which leads the world with more than 10 million broadband subscribers,” said Su Bong Lee, director of Hyundai Networks.  “Our carrier customers are now moving to deploy VDSL-DMT, and they want the kind of interoperable end-to-end solutions that our partnership with Nokia, Zyxel and Ikanos will provide.”
“As a worldwide leader in CPE, we understand the importance of interoperability with DSLAMs from multiple vendors,” said Munira Brooks, vice president of sales and marketing and Strategic Business Development, North America, for ZyXEL.  “By working with Nokia, Ikanos, and Hyundai, we can ensure that our customers will have interoperability with market-leading DSLAMs.”
