Mountain View, CA - Nokia (NYSE:NOK) security appliances lead the most competitive segment of the firewall/Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliance market ($1,000 - $5,000), and were second in the overall worldwide firewall/VPN and Intrusion Detection appliance market last year, according to a November 2002 study from analyst firm IDC titled, "Worldwide Security Appliance Market Forecast and Analysis 2002 - 2006: Hardware Continues to be the Choice of Security Software Deployment." The study also concludes that in 2001, Nokia appliances combined with premier partner Check Point(TM) Software Technologies' (Nasdaq:CHKP) VPN-1(R)/FireWall-1(R)software, resulted in more than 30 percent of the worldwide firewall/VPN appliance market, just 2 percent short of the market-leading position.

"One of the first vendors to offer a security "appliance", Nokia is well positioned to maintain its leadership in this competitive marketplace."
A testament to the strength of the Nokia - Check Point partnership, IDC estimates that in 2001, half of Check Point's enterprise firewall/VPN software revenue was directly related to its appliance channel, with Nokia capturing approximately 80 percent of that revenue. This is significant considering the combined percentages of firewall/VPN appliances utilizing Check Point's VPN-1/FireWall-1 software surpass any single vendor's revenue.
