Gamel Abdullah, born Gamel Addin Ibn Abdullah, birthed to the world on September 24, 1960, in the heart of north Philadelphia just one block from the famous Robin Hood Dell. Born to Nassardin and Sayeeda Abdullah who raised him under the guidance of Allah in Islam, Abdullah credits them for being one of the many trailblazers to introduce Islam to the Philadelphia area in the 1960s.
In 1965, all of Abdullah's classmates and the children in his neighborhood thought he had a strange name. They had never heard of such a name. Jane, Billy, Bobby and Susan were very common names during that time of his life. There were no African or Arabic names being used during that time.
Abdullah's father taught him that his name had meaning, a foundation, culture and spirit. Today, nearly 80% percent of his children's classmates and friends have African or Arabic names, and Islam is practiced by families all over the United States, as well as the world.
