SOLNA, Sweden, Feb. 7, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- NCC has been commissioned by Viking Malt AB to build a new malting plant at the export harbor in Halmstad, Sweden. The total value of the project is SEK 96 million.
NCC built the existing malting plant in Halmstad a few years ago and has now been entrusted of Viking Malt AB with construction of a twin facility.
Since malt is produced in a vertical process, the building's height will be a full 90 meters, thus imposing considerable demands on, for example, foundation engineering. Accordingly, CFA (continuous flight auger) piles will be used, a method that is relatively uncommon in Sweden and involves drilling holes with a depth of 26 meters and a diameter of 700 mm and filling them with reinforced concrete.
"Naturally, the fact that we built Viking Malt's existing facility gave us an edge when we tendered for the new project. In addition, large parts of the site organization will be virtually identical to the one used for the first assignment," said Tommy Zryd, NCC's Business Manager at NCC.
The process equipment for the plant, which will be assembled by a German joint contractor, requires that NCC's extensive concreting work (a total of 9,000 m3) be performed with the utmost precision. Considerable amounts of project work will be conducted on a shift basis. During the most intensive phase, it is estimated that about 80 employees will be engaged in the project, which will be initiated immediately and is scheduled for completion in April 2004.
