Edith's Secret -- New Novel Shows The Triumph Of The American Dream

PALM DESERT, Calif., February 12, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- As the 20th century dawned, people from all over the world streamed into the United States. These immigrants saw something in this country they could not find in their homelands: the chance to pursue their dreams. It is this pursuit that lies at the heart of Edith's Secret (available from 1stBooks Library).

Edith has a dream. The oldest of 11 children and the only one not born in the United States, she desperately wants to become a literate, productive citizen of her new country. As the eldest child, however, Edith's responsibilities lie with her family. She must care for her younger siblings, a responsibility that dashes her hopes for an education. Each time she tries to achieve her goal, some crisis arises and she must put her ambitions on hold. Does Edith give up? Do her dreams die under the weight of misfortune? Edith does what she must to survive in her new world, but never takes her eyes off her ultimate prize. Based on the life of the author's mother, Edith's Secret takes readers into a world where determination and desire triumph over adversity as Edith overcomes obstacles that take her from Milwaukee to Los Angeles, where she finds a new life and achieves her dream.

"Multi-talented" describes author Doris Schaffer. She has written a motivational sales manual, a how-to guide for selling fine jewelry published by the Jeweler's Book Club, a screenplay entitled "Family Business," as well as short stories and articles. She has been a songwriter, a member of BMI, Romance Writers of America and a producer for Sr. TV in Palm Desert. She is also a member of the Palm Springs Writer's Guild and former editor of its newsletter. Edith's Secret is her first novel.
