Remembering The Oregon Trail -- New Author Brings Familiar Trail to Life in New Historical Novel

LAS VEGAS, March 13, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- For many people, the Oregon Trail is merely something they read about once in an eighth grade history class. Minor historical knowledge will lend three conclusions about the topic: the story features settlers moving west, Native American Indians and the perils of starting life anew in wild parts of the country. All is correct, however, the Oregon Trail also presents a story of life, love and loss in a country just beginning to find itself. Author F. Eugene Barber brings to life the magic, terror and power of this time in Escape: Along The Oregon Trail (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Escape is the story of a young emigrant girl, Anne, who was captured by a Cheyenne Indian as her family travels west. As Anne grows and changes into a powerful, angry and beautiful young woman, she forces herself to remember everything from her 10 years with the Cheyenne Indians. At last a moment presents itself and she is free to escape and return to the life she left behind and the people in her past.

Will Anne find the father who never gave up on her? Will she find her place amongst a people she barely remembers? Will the Oregon Trail lead her home?

Escape contains historical facts in the form of date, famous military generals of the day and well documented Indian chiefs. Barber spent many years researching the landscape, plant life and weather patterns of the areas in which Escape takes place prior to the writing of this book.

Barber has an associate's degree in engineering, a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree. After serving his country in the Korean War, Barber spent most of his career working in the California Aerospace Industry.
